Deepavalie - Festival of Lamps

Known as the "Festival of Lights," Diwali symbolises the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind. It is also called as Deepavali (Deepasya Aavali - Row of Lamp, Deep - Lamp, Aavali - Row). Just a few moments before writing this sentence we, Baba and myself, were discussing about this when he said the following. Like a little lamp lightens its little surrundings, a row of little lamps lightens a larger surroundings. Similarly an human being can lighten his surroundings whereas an organised act - metaphor to numerous lamps organised in rows - can enlighten the universe.

The cause for celebration, as an utsav, crosses the boundaries of region and religion. So dear visitor, I, on behalf of myself and my family and my circle of friends, wish you and your dear ones a very happy deepavali. May the coming year bring prosperity to your life.

Those in IIT Madras campus should not forget to participate Deepotsav 2006 on 21st evening.

Photograph of the day - Nature series

This photo is taken in the garden of Cauvery Hostel in IIT Madras campus. The striking feature in this picture is the dark, blurred background. The image could look better if I could avoid the bright reflection from the edges of the flower petals. This reflection has made the flowers look less tender, whereas the buds behind the front two flowers look tender and one can feel the freshness of the morning sun rays. Anyway, had I taken the photo some two hours earlier, the effect I mentioned earlier could be achieved without extra efforts.

Photograph of the day - Nature (Landscapes), Travel

On the way to Mumbai, via Pune - Mumbai Express Way, this snap was taken a few kilometers before entering Lonavala (near famus Khandala) through glass pane of the bus window. This itself is popular hill station. This trip was a part of my visit to various places in Western Maharastra (my home state) in which I travelled total 3800 km by road (bus/car/untility vehicle/motorcycle) as a change from routine train journey. Obviously this travel was spread over two rainy weeks around mid-July of 2004.

It was around 10 in morning and it was raining outside. I have added a blue tint at the top of the image to suppress the brighness of the clouds over the hills. The same effect could be obtained by attaching a graded blue filter (1/4th) to the lens.

Photograph of the day - Nature (Landscapes)

This photograph these paddy fields was taken at a place in Raigad District in the State of Maharashtra during monsoon of 2004. It was around 8 am in morning and the sky was overcast rain had taken a short recess some ten - fifteen minutes; perhaps to allow me to get my camera in action. I have added a sky blue tint to the top portion of photo. The result is the photo on right. I really don't know how good its effect has been. Comments are welcome.

Lush green paddy field in rural India

The original photo, left most, is straightened to set imaginary horizen right and then it is cropped at the bottom (middle image). This eables the image to fit into the famous Rule of Thirds. Lastly the colours are corrected in order to reduce warmth making the sky look blue.
